Ethiopian cotton shawls - what a feeling

April 26, 2014, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia -- I've met a variety of wonderful women designers here in Ethiopia who really know how to get the best out of Ethiopian cotton. The designs are so vibrant and the feel is so soft. Many combine cotton with locally grown silk, as in this shawl below.

In the case of Genet Kebede, who is the designer of Paradise Fashion and part owner of GMM Garments, cotton combines beautifully with cashmere from Italy!

Here Genet has combined Ethiopian cotton with shetland wool from England!

What a surprise to learn that silk is made in Ethiopia. There are two varieties: eri silk (also known as ahimsa silk or the fabric of peace) and mulberry silk. Below is a beautiful natural colored silk scarf by Genet.

Finally, the classic of Ethiopian weaving - the gabi.

Each piece is hand woven according to time-honored tradition by women and men who spin, weave, and finish for fair wages under decent working conditions. I have visited all the workplaces.

No two shawls are exactly the same - making it a true collectors item. To care for this one-of-a-kind, unique shawl, you handwash in Woolite. The more you wash it, the softer and more comfortable it becomes. It doesn't wear out and goes with any outfit.

It is what your fashion statement says about you.
